The Boeing E-3 Sentry, more commonly referred to as an AWACS, is a support aircraft used in the armed forces.
Fictional History[]
Area 7[]
Three AWACS were added to Area 7's small number of aircraft prior to 2001. One was kept in the Level 1 hanger, and another pair in the Level 2 hanger.
Shortly after Caesar's coup against the President began, the Marines Schofield, Mother, Gant and Brainiac fled down a ventilation shaft to the Level 1 hanger, where they spotted the AWACS plane stored there. Seeking to confirm Caesar's claim that he had placed a transmitter on the President's heart, the group boarded the plane and used the equipment inside.
As they confirmed Caesar wasn't lying, they were located by the 7th Squadron's Charlie unit, who prepared to storm the AWACS plane and fire missile from their avenger Humvees. However Mother started up the plane and began driving it around the hanger. The plane crushed one avenger in the chaos, and Brainiac initiated the AWACS' jamming capabilities to avoid missile fire from the other avenger, resulting in near misses. When Charlie attempted to resume trying to storm the plane, Schofield used the pilot's ejection set to send a Charlie man straight up into the hanger's ceiling. Knowing that they couldn't hold them off forever, Schofield proceeded to drive the AWACS into the aircraft elevator shaft, crashing the plane onto the platform on Level 4. While the plane was broken into several pieces, the Marines managed to walk away.
The wreckage of the AWACS was used to Schofield's advantage during his attempt to reclaim the Football.
One of the AWACS on Level 2 was used by Gant to isolate and copy the signal the President's transmitter was sending, along with its black box, in order to create an alternate transmitter for the detecting satellite to pick up once they found a way to deactivate the President's transmitter.
When the prisoners escaped and captured some of Caesar's men, they forced people into the maze of parts so that they could be hunted. The same area was used as an arena for a forced battle to the death between Schofield's group and the Air Force men, with parts of the AWACS' wreckage being used as crude hand-to-hand weapons.
The remaining two AWACS plane at Area 7 were destroyed when the base self-destructed.
